The entire period of maternity leading up to the final moments of the child being born is filled with expectations and many types of apprehensions. Understanding Cervical Dilation



Among the many changes that the mother's body goes through, one is the defined alteration in the shape and size of the cervix. This is important since the cervix forms an integral part of the birth canal. If the birth canal isn't big enough and isn't lubricated to the required extent, childbirth can be excruciatingly painful for the mother and may even harm the infant. The cervix can dilate up to 10-12 cm. This is often called cervical dilation. The stimulus to dilate is created by the growing fetus. When the fetus starts gaining an appreciable size, it exerts some pressure on the cervix walls due to its increasing weight. Due to this stimulus, the cervical dilations begin. However, if the pressure upon the cervix is too much, it can strain it beyond the required level and create serious issues. The muscles of the cervix can open and dilate to an abnormal extent. The cervix should be dilated only to the extent of easing the passage for the baby. Any dilation beyond this requirement can induce unwanted uneasiness and cervical cramping. Many times, pregnant women raise false, delivery alarms due to an abnormally enlarged and sensitive cervix.

Cervical Dilation Examinations

This is why most of the physicians insist that after a few months into the pregnancy, women should get their cervical dilation reviewed. This is easily done through a physical exam that can be conducted by the attending physician or even a senior nurse. The examination gives a realistic approximation regarding the delivery. The examiner can also evaluate if the cervical dilation is normal. Done as a part of vaginal examinations, cervical dilation is easy-to-decode. Mostly, the attending physician will give his opinion within a few minutes of checking the cervix.
